Most health insurance companies cover genetic testing for appropriately screened patients.
The Genetic Testing Process
To guide patients at risk for hereditary cancer through the information-gathering and testing process:
- Have them complete the quick and easy Hereditary Cancer Quiz on this site.
- Instruct them to print the quiz results to help prepare for cancer risk assessment. (If your practice does not offer cancer risk assessment and genetic testing, you can search for a center on this site.)
- Discuss family history and concerns about hereditary cancers with the patient. (Remind them that a Cancer History Guide is also available on this site to help them probe family cancer history.)
- Discuss the benefits and limitations of genetic testing, and determine if the patient is an appropriate candidate.
- For testing, a small amount of blood must be drawn and sent to Myriad Genetic Laboratories for analysis. Order a Test Kit Patients must have informed consent before sending a sample for testing. Note: An oral rinse process is available for BRACAnalysis and COLARIS as an alternative to traditional blood draw.
- Test results are available in about 2 weeks.
After receiving test results, you should discuss management options with your patients.
